Summary

Colorado Midland Ghost standard gauge from Colo. Springs to Aspen and Glenwood Springs. Operated 1887 – 1921. One of the most interesting of Rocky Mountain Railroading.
Colorado Midland standard gauge from Colorado Springs to South Park, Leadville to Hagerman Tunnel and down to Basalt, Aspen and Glenwood Springs. Operated 1887 - 1921. Had several tunnels and interesting grade up Ute Pass above Manitou and below Woodland Park then a more open grade in the rolling hills below Divide and open fields westward except for a few narrow canyons. Branched to Cripple Creek at Divide. The grade west from Divide is still visible through Florissant, Lake George for ice, 11 mile canyon, Hartsel, Buena Vista, Leadville, continental divide, Basalt. This is an interesting RR to follow as much of the grade, tunnels, and buildings are still visible.

The hike from the end of the well graded RR bed auto road at Busk-Ivanhoe to the Hagerman Tunnel Tunnel elevation 11,528 and 2,064 ft. Used from 1887 -1893 and again 1897 - 1899. The Busk-Ivanhoe Tunnel much lower and longer was used for most of the railroad's operation from 1893 - 1921. The hike from the end of the well graded RR bed auto road at Busk-Ivanhoe to the Hagerman Tunnel is easy and very picturesque. About 2.8 miles on the road bed and less by direct trail. The bed snakes back and forth as it climbs to the tunnel. Town sites, ties, trestle remnants, snowshed remnants are still found. Our GPS and photo log expert was Harley Hamilton from Buena Vista. Tunnel elevation 11,528 and 2,064 ft. Used from 1887 -1893 and again 1897 - 1899. The Busk-Ivanhoe Tunnel much lower and longer was used for most of the railroad's operation from 1893 - 1921. Colorado Midland was considered one of the great feats of railroad engineering. The hike from the end of the well graded RR bed auto road at Busk-Ivanhoe to the Hagerman Tunnel is easy and very picturesque. About 2.8 miles on the road bed and less by direct trail. The bed snakes back and forth as it climbs to the tunnel. Town sites, ties, trestle remnants, snowshed remnants are still found. Douglass city is spread over a large area below the tunnel. In reviewing our photos and the book mentioned below, it will take several more days to photograph this interesting railroad on both sides of the continental divide. The west side is also very interesting with the tunnel being filled ½ with water but wood in good shape. Our GPS and photo log expert was Harley Hamilton from Buena Vista.

We recommend the book Colorado Midland Railway by Dan Abbott ISBN 0-913582-45-X. An excellent book with good descriptions and a large number of period photos. We find this to be one of the most interesting of Colorado’s mountain railroading.
